A New Year Full of Hope and Opportunity

As we approach the new year 2012 I am full of hope and optimism for Cameron.  In August his doctor released him from his care with expectations of finishing his middle school years pain-free.   As I reflect back on all that has happened to him and our family during the past four years, I am hopeful that Cameron can finally experience a childhood without extreme pain or discomfort.

People still often ask about Cameron and his progression with this horrific disease, and I am so happy to report that he is doing well.  This biggest milestone of 2011 for Cam was completing a season of select soccer for the first time sense being diagnosed with Perthes four years ago.  He had waited so long to physically be able to do that.  It was such a blessing to watch him run the field for long periods of time without a limp or discomfort.  Especially, knowing that many children that have Perthes, will never be able to physically achieve that goal.  He will soon begin the wrestling season, with his "healed" hips, and I can only hope that his legs will only get stronger. It is true that he has been participating in sports while fighting this battle, but not without pain.

As the new year approaches, I can't help but know that children everywhere are fighting battles.  Some far worse then Cameron, but they are all unwanted struggles that no person would wish on any child.  In fighting this battle with Cameron, I have learned some valuable life lessons from him.  We are often stronger than we realize.  Adversity has really made him tougher and in the face of difficult moments, it is what makes prosperity such sweet victory.  I am beyond proud of Cameron for facing his adversity with the courage and determination of a true warrior.

I wish all of you a "healthy" and happy New Year 2012.  I hope for less battles ahead for all of us, but if they do arise, may all of us face our own battles with strength and courage and the support of loved ones.
